Rosemary Sutcliff's writing is luminous and lyrical, as usual. The light she shines on the dark days after Britain's loss of the Legions shows not just devastation and chaos but hope and honour. Sadder and harsher even than The Silver Branch, The Lantern Bearers is still a joy to read, a perfect book.
